SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, November 16, 2017 / — You’ve probably heard before about treasure hunters who use metal detectors, but how many of them did they actually find something valuable?

Jared Hadaway not only struck gold using his metal detector, but he donated one million dollars after becoming rich overnight.

Jared Hadaway worked as a young gardener in Santa Monica, California, but gardening wasn’t his only passion. He was also a “treasure hunter” during his free time.

Hadaway speaks about how he developed an interest in using a metal detector since he was a child, and his parents sparked his curiosity for games that included finding things that are lost.

"I used to do it for a long time. When I was young, my parents used to have some kind of a ritual if they were to give me a present: I had to search for it. You might find it interesting; some people smoke, some people do drugs, some people drink, I just search for treasure. My family did a great job because whenever I had to search and find my present in my house or outside, I used to get really excited. This is how our internal reward system works. It's fascinating how something such as a neurotransmitter can do; sometimes I wonder if it's emotions or just chemicals in our brain. Having to search for something in order to get the reward, excites the willpower and when you find it, you get a small dose of dopamine. This is exactly how I felt when I found the gold,"

During one of his many walks on the beach with a metal detector, he found something that many spend their entire lives searching for. He found a large number of ancient coins worth two million dollars.

The coins he found appeared to be from Catalunya, and they are thought to be stolen by pirates and hidden on one of the beaches in California.

While nobody knows how the foreign coins actually ended up on the beaches of Santa Monica, finding them changed Hadaway’s life by making him more involved in his community.

When asked what he will do with his money, the young gardener spoke about a well-deserved vacation and giving half of his newly found treasure to charity.

"Well, first things first, I will give myself a well-deserved vacation. I will also put my metal detector on standby for a while. I always loved gardening, so maybe I will extend my garden and make it look amazing. Investing them is not a bad idea, maybe a gardening business or a furniture store? There's enough time for me to think about it. As for 1 million dollars, I will donate them to charity. I grew in poverty; I know what it means to struggle. This is why I was so excited when my parents used to give me presents. Not only because they had me search for it, but because it was such a rare event. I want to help the poor families. Those kids deserve better. Maybe I deserved better too, or maybe this is why I had to struggle for – to help everyone else."

The treasure hunter now intends to raise awareness of the poor neighborhoods in Santa Monica and convince the authorities to provide free medical services to those in need, especially to children and elderly who have weaker immune systems.

As for the million he donated, the money will be used to renovate some apartments and pay for the medical bills of children suffering from leukemia.

Hadaway’s efforts to improve the lives of impoverished families in Santa Monica makes it apparent that the pirate's coins are in good hands.
