Each year, Taste Canada presents awards to some of the best food and beverage authors in both official languages. The jury is comprised of volunteers from Canada’s culinary profession appointed by an independent selection committee.

Now in its 23rd year, the Taste Canada Awards / Les Lauréats des Saveurs du Canada (tastecanada.org) announced the shortlist of cookbooks competing for a coveted culinary writing award as well as the virtual gala hosts. Eighty-six cookbooks entered the competition, featuring authors from 7 provinces. The shortlist narrowed the competition to 5 entries per category, featuring authors from 6 provinces.

The Taste Canada Awards shortlist announcement was delivered by Susanne Mikler and Chef Martin Juneau, renowned culinary icons.


Susanne Mikler is the co-founder of LC Liaison College I Culinary Arts, a facility that trains gourmet chefs in 10 campuses located throughout Southern Ontario and was recently ranked as the fourth best culinary arts school in the world by the Chef2Chef Culinary Portal.
A dynamic and visionary entrepreneur and a natural leader, Susanne is a graduate of Seneca College (Travel and Tourism Diploma Program) and attended the University of Waterloo (Undergraduate Program in Arts and Social Work).

In addition to her current duties as VP of Corporate Affairs for Liaison College, Susanne is past chair of the Board of Women in Food Industry Management. Committed to improving the culinary arts in Canada by mentoring chefs and chefs-in-training as well as someone who is generous with recognition and appreciation for her teams, she was nominated for an RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur in the Bell Trailblazer category (2006).

Susanne has also served as Ontario Director with the Canadian Chef Educators Association, chaired the Guelph Region chapter of Cuisine Canada, held positions with both the Ontario and National Association of Career Colleges and been a member of the National Accreditation Commission, among other roles.

She currently sits as a much-esteemed Director on the Taste Canada’s Board.


Co-owner of Pastaga, vins nature & restaurant (ranked 5th best new restaurant in Canada by EnRoute in 2012) and named best Canadian chef in 2011 during the Gold Medal Plates competition, Martin Juneau became known to the general public in as a judge of culinary reality TV Et que ça saute!, broadcast on V in 2011 and 2012. His inventive, eclectic and unpretentious cuisine is one of the most creative in the province. Very attached to Quebec's culinary traditions, he was the perfect person to lead Les Prix Juneau in 2014, where he traveled the roads of Quebec in search of the best recipes.

Since 2015, his plate has been full! We only have to think of Monsieur Crémeux, dairy bar (also a food truck), Le Petit Coin, a neighborhood grocery store, or even the Cul-Sec wine store, all located on Beaubien Street. Without forgetting the cafeteria-sandwich shop-co-working space, Tricot Principal, in the mile-ex, as well as Pastaga Boutique, located in the food court of the Rockland Center.

After 2 years at the helm of programs The Zeste menus by Martin Juneau and The Tag BBQ on the Zeste channel, Martin co-hosted Meilleur que le chef at Canal Vie, with Dany St-Pierre, as well as produced, developed and animated the Amuse-Bouches web-series with his wife Valérie Roberts.

His cooking career started in 1998 and led him to work at Lumière in Vancouver, at the Auberge de la Charme in Burgundy as well as in the most beautiful tables of Montreal: Le Club des Pins, Les Caprices by Nicolas, La Bastide, and Derrière les Fagots, before opening his first restaurant La Montée de Lait in 2005.

These routines are largely beneficial, both psychologically and physiologically, as children are encouraged to focus on thematic concepts, such as peace, respect, gratitude, and healthy living. Through visual imagery and relaxation, children are empowered to quiet the mind and body. Additionally, yoga concentrates on activities that form relationships by practicing compassion, respect, and support with others. It is a wonderful foundation to establish for children because, as they grow up, they are capable of expanding on these ideas, creating a deeper awareness.

Mental Health

Most schools fail to integrate mental health into the curriculum, Nicholas Gerace confirms, but homeschooling can be a highly effective source of mental health education. After learning about the topic of depression, children may use mindfulness and meditation when feelings of sadness are encountered. By beginning these lessons at an early age, it eliminates the notion that mental illness is an unspeakable subject and instead sparks their motivation to comprehend its potential impact on an individual. Being compassionate and understanding, children become better equipped to express genuine empathy to those who suffer from mental health problems.


Schooling systems have a reputation for overlooking the creative side of a child, that special attribute which can produce magical thoughts. Although subjects like math and science might not seem to be the most ideal of creative outlets, truthfully, an astute teacher can stimulate children to think outside of the box in any circumstances. Unfortunately, the educational institutions and their guidelines often prevent these teachers from this process; however, homeschooling fosters a creative atmosphere throughout the day. Although academia is extremely vital, far too frequently, it falls substantially short of fostering and promoting creativity.


Teaching children to understand themselves to a greater extent, you allow them to discover their tendencies and adapt to various scenarios. Rather than forcing a child to learn in a specific manner, which the majority of educational institutions are guilty of, homeschooling modifies the approach to suit each student. Simply explaining why and how a child learns differently from the customary manner can produce a positive, helpful outcome. People who are increasingly self-aware tend to have a higher level of psychological health and a more favorable outlook on life.

RALEIGH, NC, USA, June 23, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — “Gardening is booming in all parts of the country, and nurseries have struggled to keep up with the unprecedented and unexpected demand,” said global plantsman, Tony Avent, founder and proprietor of Juniper Level Botanic Garden and Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh.

“Gardening is a huge pastime in America, but no one was prepared for this. Nurseries are propagating as fast as they can and shipping as quickly as they can. People have reconnected with the earth, and every plant that goes into the ground pulls carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. That’s undoubtedly a good thing.

“I believe the bulk of the boom is coming from existing gardeners. However, at our open houses, we see a tremendous number of younger people, generations X, Y, and Z. They’re interested in connecting to nature and having a garden experience in a different way than their parents or grandparents, who were all about better living through chemicals. They’re learning to be more a part of nature, to garden more sustainably.

“Summer is an incredible time in the garden. At our open house, you’ll see a range of plants you’ve never seen. Many plants don’t emerge until mid-June, early July. People who don’t see the gardens in summer miss so many things. They miss many of our great native perennials in the Aster family – so many beautiful gold flowers.

“All the tropical-looking plants are at their peak in the summer months; the cannas, the elephant ears, so many of the aroids [love lilies], and all kinds of crazy things. These are at their peak in the garden, so we see a peak in sales of tropical-looking plants in the summer.

“Pollinators are also more active in the summer months; all the bees, the native bees, the honeybees, and the amazing wasps. Wasps are actually predators of many beetles, so you want them in your garden. Some gardeners are caught up in spraying every time they see an insect, but there are naturally balanced systems in place to take care of pests as long as your plants aren’t stressed. If you provide a sustainable environment, there is balance. When a pest arrives, another insect will take it out. The birds also dine on many problematic insects.

“Nature is fascinating, and there is no more active time than summer. Everything is fully at work. We invite you to bring your children to our open houses and teach your children; or, let us help you teach them. We have a full-time entomologist on staff to teach people about insects and how insects work in the garden. Maybe we can get away from the concept that bugs are bad – they are critical to our life and nature.

“In the summer, you’ll find a 25 to 30-degree difference just walking through sections of Juniper Level Botanic Garden. A garden is like a house. It has walls. It has ceilings. It has the floor. It has furniture, and it has decorations. But we often don’t think of the outside of our house like we do the inside. So, when you walk outside, if you have a ceiling, the trees, it's going to be much cooler in there. Some plants love that baking sun, other plants like to have the filtered light of the tree canopy.

“Many people also think you cannot plant in the summer, which is simply not true. The establishment time for a plant is so much faster in the summer months, and the watering time for new plants is much shorter. If you plant in the winter, you can get by with infrequent waterings, but if you plant in summer, you need to water every day. But the tradeoff is that you only have to water for a week or so before the plant is fully established.

“Gardening is about diversity. Hopefully, we’ve learned that we, as a society, are better with diversity. Gardens are the same way; we want everyone to have an incredibly diverse garden. That way, the garden has something for all the pollinators and something for every season for people to enjoy. That’s what we hope to show people when they come to visit.

“It’s also important for human society to share plants; it’s critical that we not allow plants to go extinct. The rarer a plant is, the more it should be shared. We believe in getting plants where they will thrive and become abundant.

“We’ve joined forces with NC State University and JC Raulston Arboretum because we have the same mission. Secure the plants, study the plants, propagate the plants, and share the plants. It’s so important to our society. Every plant has a place, and every plant has a purpose,” said Tony Avent.

Even so, for the week ending June 13, 2020, shoppers continued making fewer trips to grocery and drug stores nationwide — while spending more per visit compared to the same period a year ago. Total sales dollars per store were up by an average of 9%, with basket sizes increasing by 25% over the prior year — even as the number of shopping trips declined by 13%.

This behavior first started to take root in mid-February when coronavirus concerns began to emerge in earnest across the country. Since that time, Catalina has been using its Buyer Intelligence Database to track sales data by state across 78 major grocery and drug categories, the results of which the company has been sharing via an interactive map. Strong-Selling Categories Nationwide Underscore Return to the Great Outdoors
With many Americans homebound for several weeks, there has been avid enthusiasm for getting back outdoors, as Catalina’s database attests. Camping supplies have surged by more than 80% as more people, still reluctant to board flights and check into hotels at this juncture, are planning road trips that involve sleeping under the stars.

Considering that millions of people have channeled their “inner chef” since the onset of the pandemic, it’s no wonder that barbecuing and campfires have become increasingly popular. Charcoal and lighter fluid sales were both up 26% respectively over the same period a year ago, with fire logs up 64%. Meanwhile, barbecue sauces were up 25%, and condiments showed a healthy increase (ketchup up 14%, mustard up 18%, and relishes up 14%). Paper, plastic and Styrofoam plates and bowls were up 23%.

With baking surging in popularity in recent months, it’s not surprising that creating s’mores over an open flame is delighting sweet lovers of all ages. Marshmallow sales were up 27 percent, while chocolate bar sales increased by 24% and graham crackers by 7%. And to help alleviate stress, millions of people have turned to gardening, with sales of potting soil and fertilizers up 41% — as well as to exercise, with sports drinks up 36%. Of course, being outside can have its downside: sales of insecticides and insect repellants were up 34% and 20% respectively. For the same period vs. a year ago, sunscreen and suntanning lotions and creams were up 16%.
