Commissioners and Certified Gardeners held Save the Monarch event at Von Nieda Park in Camden

On Tuesday evening, the Board of Commissioners and Camden County Certified Gardeners came together in Camden for another iteration of the incredibly popular Save the Monarch event, aimed at raising awareness and encouraging action to protect the monarch butterfly and its declining population. The event featured the release of more than 400 adult monarch butterflies, and attendees had the opportunity to take home a milkweed plant of their own.

“Bringing the Save the Monarch event to Camden is another opportunity to connect residents with the important work happening throughout Camden County to protect these remarkable pollinators,” Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said. “Monarchs face significant threats from habitat loss and climate change, but even small actions, like planting milkweed and creating spaces where monarchs can feed and reproduce, can make a meaningful difference.”

Camden County has worked to expand habitats for local monarchs by installing waystations throughout the county. These waystations are equipped with milkweed, which are the only host plants for monarch caterpillars, as well as nectar producing plants that provide an important food source for adult monarch butterflies.
