Nile’s Project Urges Sepsis Awareness/Prevention for COVID-19 and Other Infectious Disease Survivors

Non-profit is sharing websites to find free access to online materials as sepsis risk increases due to pandemic

RIVERSIDE, CA, USA, June 4, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Nile’s Project, a 501c3 non-profit foundation and public awareness/educational organization dedicated to preventing avoidable death and harm from infectious diseases, today announced an educational initiative to increase awareness of sepsis by those who have experienced COVID-19 or other infectious diseases.

“One of the deadly side effects of COVID-19 is that it makes patients especially vulnerable to sepsis, the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection of any kind,” said Ty Moss, Chief Executive Officer, Nile’s Project. “Sepsis can result from a skinned knee playing baseball, a cut on the finger acquired while gardening or a urinary tract infection, to give just a few examples.”

Moss added, “Our latest public awareness campaign is focused on educating people about the four signs of sepsis and to act fast if you or a loved one are experiencing two of these symptoms as identified by The Sepsis Alliance. We also applaud the U.S. government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for educating us all about what they’ve learned about the coronavirus.”

“Sepsis is a preventable disease, but it must be acted upon fast to prevent harm,” Moss said. “Each year in the United States more than 1.7 million people get sepsis and 270,000 of them die. The CDC estimates of the 700,000 survivors of sepsis are living with the side effects and many COVID-19 patients who have suffered serious infections could be at risk.”

Moss recommended that people familiarize themselves with the
Sepsis Alliance’s (sepsis.org) powerful tool “T.I.M.E. pocket card” that lists the four signs of sepsis, namely:

• Temperature: Lower or Higher
• Infection of any Kind
• Mental decline
• Extreme pain

Nile’s Project was formed in 2007 when Ty and Carole Moss unexpectedly lost their 15- year-old son Nile, who died from delayed treatment of sepsis after he contracted a bacterial infection called MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) from unclean surfaces while undergoing an MRI at the top Children’s hospital in Orange County, California.

“Getting Ahead of Sepsis in the Time of COVID-19” is the latest public health advocacy initiative launched by Nile’s Project. The organization is educating the public by supporting and promoting the CDC’s Sepsis Awareness Campaign, “Getting Ahead of Sepsis. Know the Signs. Act Fast” and the Sepsis Alliance’s T.I.M.E. initiative.

Now in its 23rd year, Taste Canada Awards / Les Lauréats des Saveurs du Canada (tastecanada.org) has announced the full list of cookbooks competing for a coveted culinary writing award.

“Now, more than ever, people are cooking at home and taking culinary adventures in their very own kitchens. This is a tremendous opportunity to wave our Canadian flags in celebration of our talented Canadian authors and their outstanding cookbooks,” says Karen Baxter, Executive Director, Taste Canada.

Each year, Taste Canada presents awards to some of the best food and beverage authors in both official languages. The jury is comprised of volunteers from Canada’s culinary profession appointed by an independent selection committee. The shortlist, to be revealed online on June 25, 2020, narrows the competition to a maximum of 5 entries per category.

Which book segment has higher sales in Canada: cookbooks or fiction?

The answer: COOKBOOKS! Cookbooks remain a very large industry in Canada. Did you know that in 2019, according to BookNet, the total unit of print books sold in Canada in the “cooking” subject category amounted to at least 1.6 million, for a total value of $38 million? Shout it from every kitchen across the country, Canadians love cookbooks!

In a recent survey by Dalhousie University, for people born before 1946, 95% ate meals prepared by parents or a caregiver at home when growing up. That percentage dropped significantly over the years. Millennials were not exposed to home cooked meals as much, and neither was Generation Z. About 64% of Millennials regularly ate home-cooked meals when growing up, compared to 55% for Gen Z.

In that same survey conducted by Dalhousie University, 68.4% of Canadians would like to spend more time preparing food at home. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, many younger generations are doing just that, becoming familiar with cooking and spending more time in the kitchen.

Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University, states "reading a cookbook is like watching a good movie. We can project ourselves into the story, imagine we can do things we never thought possible, making us dream. Some cookbooks these days are masterpieces, works of art."

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES, May 19, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Two California students who were awarded the Frances Briggs Memorial Scholarship will receive $1,000 for the 2020-2021 academic year. Pittsburg High School seniors, Joshua Rei Quisao and Alondra Yaquelin Rodriguez were named the 2020 scholarship recipients during a virtual award ceremony on May 18, 2020.

The scholarships are funded privately and honor the memory of Frances Briggs. They are awarded to exceptionally promising high school seniors who pursue postsecondary education that leads to a teaching position, and have a financial need.

Alondra Yaquelin Rodriguez will be attending California State University, East Bay. She volunteered at several elementary schools while attending high school and says that’s where her interest in becoming a teacher, grew.

Rodriguez shared that her “goal is to obtain my bachelor’s degree and teaching credential at the same time through a program offered by most California State Universities.”

Joshua Rei Quisao has committed to the University of California, Davis. He spoke about his inspiration to teach while on a student excursion in Quito, Ecuador. “I carried dry-erase markers and paper in my Old Navy back pack. I spent three days tutoring students in Quito. It was a point during my life that I realized I enjoyed leading and wanted to become a teacher,” he shared.

“Joshua and Alondra are familiar with the demands and still enthusiastically look forward to becoming exceptional teachers,” stated Fran Briggs, member of the Frances Briggs Memorial Committee. “Tuition and other expenses continue to rise, so they may need some assistance along the way. We’re honored to ease some of the financial burden.”

The scholarships are endowed by the family to honor Briggs for her six-decade, devotion to serving and teaching students from pre-kindergarten, to high school.

California resident, Elaine Duhay recalled that after graduating a decade ago, she told Frances Briggs that she was going to college. The educator congratulated her, smiled, and wrote her a check to buy her books.

Duhay said she was moved to tears by her generosity, but didn’t accept the check, initially. “It was way too much money,” she explained. “I took it only after Mrs. Briggs sternly asked me to take it. I had no idea how expensive college books were, but Mrs. Briggs, did.”

ABOUT FRANCES BRIGGS

Frances Briggs graduated with B. A., in Education, and a minor in Music Education, from San Francisco State. She later earned a master degree from St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA. She was a dedicated, kind, and innovative teacher that positively influenced, voluntarily tutored, and mentored students for 60 years. In 1958, the globally renowned, Radio City Music Hall in New York invited her to Manhattan. There she was offered a contract to perform as a musical artist. Frances politely declined citing her commitment to her family, community, and vocation as an educator. She enjoyed gardening; traveling, teaching, writing plays; choreographing; live performances, and spending time with family and friends. As the wife of Jim Briggs, the couple had seven children. The Frances Briggs Memorial Scholarships Committee is committed to serving students, and preserving the legacy of its namesake.

Marine conservation efforts are a priority at this island resort. Peter Pringle, Resident Marine Biologist at Grand Park Kodhippar details some of the key environmental initiatives at the property.

Since opening in 2017, Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives has established several coral gardening projects, where coral pieces from the House Reef are attached to purposely built underwater structures.

Upon arrival at the marina area, guests are welcomed by an artificial reef installed below the reception deck. This tunnel-shaped metal frame had several small pieces of coral attached to it during the first year of hotel operations and is now attracting additional marine life such as juvenile fishes, some already around twenty centimetres in diameter, that have developed into large colonies.

Coral nurseries have also been installed in areas of the natural House Reef. The largest of these is a mid-water rope nursery, containing 100 pieces of attached coral, that was built up over 2019 and is set in deep water near the overwater villas. Rope nurseries effectively lift attached coral pieces to grow several feet off the sea bottom, away from fine sand and competitor organisms that might normally prevent their optimal growth and survival.

Many coral nurseries use fragments taken from colonies living on the reef, removed from the ‘donor’ colony and attached in a different area to grow into a new colony (similar to how cuttings are used to propagate plants). However, as Maldivian reefs are still recovering from mass coral die-offs experienced in recent marine heat waves, we prefer to leave the surviving colonies on the reef completely intact. Instead, fragments broken off by strong waves are used for the feeding activities of marine animals or other actions. Collecting these “corals of opportunity” enhances the long-term survival prospects of each coral. We remove corals that are covered by sand and likely to die and transfer them to the mid-water rope nursery.

The resort has also devised a new interactive educational reef activity. A different style of nursery, consisting of frames holding coral fragments attached to cement pieces, was recently established and allows guests to actively participate in coral gardening. Coral fragments are attached to cone-shaped cement pieces above water using a special waterproof glue. Participants are able to swim their ‘baby coral’ out from shore to place it in the nursery. According to Peter, participants can better understand how coral colonies live and grow from the physical action of planting a coral, something not always easy to explain by simply using diagrams and pictures.

Ultimately, after several years growth in the nursery environment the corals are ready for transplanting. While coral gardening is certainly not a replacement for conservation actions needed for the continued survival of coral reefs, such as reducing carbon emissions to lessen climate change effects and improving water quality, it is constructive in increasing awareness of reef conservation and coral biology.

As a missionary and entrepreneur, in 2019 Dr James started a new TV network called WhatTV.
